Thuy & Rice Drawing| Performance Living Arts, Tulsa, Oklahoma
As part of the New Genre XXII-A Festival, I was invited to exhibit Thuy & Rice and commissioned to create a drawing|performance during the duration of the Festival.
For a duration of time, I lined individual grains of uncooked white rice along faults in the floors-this dry rivers of rice nestle in cracks and snake through the gallery, creating a hybrid topography. Audiences often stepped on the rice drawing. As an artist, this was an important aspect of the life of my work. The audiences destroyed the piece; I kept mending and fixing their mistakes. That process gave me a means to contemplate on my own mistakes. Symbolic acts of breaking and fixing are equally weighted.
Destruction is an opportunity for new growth and inspiration.
